Changing lives for over 70 years…

Recession Affecting CRM Donations

The Charlotte Observer carries the following story on our budget shortfall. As of December 31st, 2009 our operating budget is about $167,000 short.

Just weeks after going public with a $10 million capital campaign to expand a rehab program for women, Charlotte Rescue Mission is reporting it’s short of money for day-to-day operations.

Mission officials say donations were $238,000 short of projections in December, historically one of its best months for fund raising. That’s nearly 5 percent of the agency’s annual budget, said Tony Marciano, the mission’s executive director. The shortfall has been whittled to $167,000, thanks to a series of cuts to such things as food costs and office contracts.

Making the Streets a Thing of the Past

Recently, a client showed me his program completion certificate. Then, he showed me his reading certificate where he beamed with joy. Who would have known that just a short time ago, the streets were his home, the bottle was his friend, and despair was his only companion. The streets are now a thing of “his” past.

Former Homeless man now a Deacon

At the end of 2009, I received a call from a former Mission client.   Five years ago, the streets were his home.  He came to us in order to get his life back together.  Today, he has his own business, is married and is a deacon in his church thanks to our generous supporters.

What a great testimony!

Looking for Volunteer Dentists!

Due to chronic addiction and life on the streets, many of our clients suffer from poor oral health.  By the time they come to the Mission, many have painful mouth issues requiring tooth extraction.  We are looking for dentists who are willing to work pro bono with our clients who need teeth pulled.  If interested, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 704-334-4635 x 214.

Cold Weather as a Catalyst for Positive Change

The recent cold weather in Charlotte is especially difficult for the homeless.  While Charlotte Rescue Mission doesn’t take transients, the cold weather can actually help homeless men and women suffering from drug or alcohol addiction to realize their desperate need for change.  It might be the very thing that encourages them to get off the streets, enter our life changing programs, and start a new life.   Fox news has the story.

Cell Phones on Christmas Day

Every holiday, Charlotte Rescue Mission provides free phone calls for all of our guests.  For Thanksgiving and Christmas, Cricket generously provided our cell phones for free long distance including international calls.  Charlotte Observer has the following story from Christmas day:

Kevin Duffy, who has been homeless for years, asked for a cell phone Friday and called his mother for the first time in nearly a month.

Duffy was among dozens of impoverished men who used donated cell phones at the Charlotte Rescue Mission to talk to family and friends on Christmas. Read the rest of this entry »

Teaming up to Save Money

The Charlotte Observer reports on how our new Dove’s Nest facility will share a lot with United Family Services to reduce overhead costs for both ministries. We are expanding our Dove’s Nest program by building a new 90 bed facility and will share land with another women’s shelter.   This partnership is expected to save over $1 million in costs.   Read more about our Dove’s Nest Capital Campaign here.
