An anonymous donor has given $6,000 to help Dove’s Nest graduates pay for their first two months of the YWCA’s “Women in Transition” program. Charlotte Observer writes:

In the past, some graduates of Charlotte Rescue Mission’s “Dove’s Nest” — an intensive 120-day program to help women deal with drug and alcohol addictions — have moved into the YWCA’s “Women in Transition” program, which gives them secure housing and job training.

Women in Transition costs $300 a month, so women must have employment to enter the program. The monthly fee covers rent, utilities, case managers, computer access, skills workshops and budgeting assistance.

“(Women in Transition) is affordable, but it’s not affordable for someone who has no income,” said Kirsten Sikkelee, chief executive officer of YWCA Central Carolinas.

But for many women, the move from an intensive rehabilitation program to the workforce is difficult, especially in this economy.

*Update* Thanks to such a generous response, we have already filled this need. We are incredibly grateful for so many in the community who are willing to help.

We’re planning a mother’s day picnic for the women in the Dove’s Nest program and we’re looking for a sponsor. The Charlotte Observer covers the story:

There are 12 women in the Dove’s Nest program, and half of them have underage children they probably won’t be seeing on Mother’s Day. In many cases, their children are being raised by other family members or are in the care of the social services system, officials said.

This marks the first year Charlotte Rescue Mission has sought to comfort the women with a picnic, said Executive Director Tony Marciano. It’s hoped that a women’s group from a local congregation can be recruited to host the picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in a local park, he said. Transportation for the women and one staff member will be provided by the mission.

“We’re just asking for a picnic to engage the women for the day, which is huge,” said Marciano. “They often feel like a failure when it comes to their children, so we like keeping them busy.”

Donations are also needed for cookout items, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, chips, slaw, salad and condiments.

For details: call Shanté with the mission at 704-332-3999, ext. 10, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
