Charlotte Rescue Mission

Changing lives for over 70 years…

An anonymous donor has given $6,000 to help Dove’s Nest graduates pay for their first two months of the YWCA’s “Women in Transition” program. Charlotte Observer writes:

In the past, some graduates of Charlotte Rescue Mission’s “Dove’s Nest” — an intensive 120-day program to help women deal with drug and alcohol addictions — have moved into the YWCA’s “Women in Transition” program, which gives them secure housing and job training.

Women in Transition costs $300 a month, so women must have employment to enter the program. The monthly fee covers rent, utilities, case managers, computer access, skills workshops and budgeting assistance.

“(Women in Transition) is affordable, but it’s not affordable for someone who has no income,” said Kirsten Sikkelee, chief executive officer of YWCA Central Carolinas.

But for many women, the move from an intensive rehabilitation program to the workforce is difficult, especially in this economy.

Charlotte Rescue Mission’s women’s program, Dove’s Nest, is formally partnering with the Charlotte YWCA “Women in Transition” program.  After clients complete the 120 day Dove’s Nest program, they can stay in transitional housing at the YWCA for up to two years.

In addition to the programs already available through YWCA, CRM will be providing on-going counseling services for our former clients, and for other women who may not have attended Dove’s Nest.  News 14 interviewed Rev. Marciano on the subject.  Click here for the video.

*Update* Thanks to such a generous response, we have already filled this need.  We are incredibly grateful for so many in the community who are willing to help.

We’re planning a mother’s day picnic for the women in the Dove’s Nest program and we’re looking for a sponsor.  The Charlotte Observer covers the story:

There are 12 women in the Dove’s Nest program, and half of them have underage children they probably won’t be seeing on Mother’s Day. In many cases, their children are being raised by other family members or are in the care of the social services system, officials said. Read the rest of this entry »

The miracle of the Mission is the lives that are changed. It’s about the woman who stopped going back to destructive relationships and learned to say “No” to them. It’s about the man who shed tears as he learned that in spite of all he did, that God loved him unconditionally.  Thanks to our supporters who make this miracle possible.

News 14 covers the following story on our Dove’s Nest Capital Campaign with an excellent video:

CHARLOTTE — A 2008 study by the Charlotte Rescue Mission found that there were more than 1,000 women living in Charlotte-area shelters with substance abuse problems. And those numbers are only expected to rise.

With the increase in need, the Dove’s Nest in Dilworth is in the middle of a $10 million fund-raising campaign to transform the 12-bed house to a 90-bed facility.  See the story and watch the video.

A ‘halfway house’ is a stepping stone back into society.  When clients complete our programs, they have the option to extend their stay by enrolling in our halfway house.

I always get excited about clients who complete phase one of our Dove’s Nest women’s program and move onto our halfway house.  One in particular has worked hard to make the streets a thing of the past.  For years, she believed the lies she was told that she was worthless and would never amount to anything.  Today, she is gainfully employed, and is excited about her future.

Linda Currie, who has been acting as the Interim Program Director, has recently been hired as the new Program Director of Dove’s Nest.   Linda was formerly the Assistant Program Director and Admissions Counselor at Dove’s Nest.  We are glad to have such capable leadership at our women’s facility.   Congratulations Linda!

banner_dove1Dove’s Nest, Charlotte Rescue Mission’s women’s recovery program, opened its doors in 1992. The 12-bed residential home in the heart of historic Dilworth, provides a structured, yet loving and stable living environment, with a dedicated staff aimed at helping women understand and deal with the core issues of addiction as a disease.

The program provides a loving, highly-structured Christian environment to help women understand and deal with the core issues of their alcohol and/or drug addiction. The intense 120-day program focuses on spiritual, physical, social and psychological recovery. Within each of these areas, issues of shame, isolation, all types of abuse, codependency and lack of boundaries and structure are addressed. After the 120 day intensive program clients may opt for an eight month extension in our continuing care division.

Dove’s Nest offers more than a clean bed, clothing and nourishing food. Women learn how to live a life of sobriety and have a daily personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

The program is women-specific, with a staff dealing with all women’s issues including mental, emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Our clients come to Dove’s Nest to rest, mend, heal and gain a new direction in their lives.

Our dedicated staff is made up of certified substance abuse counselors, licensed clinical addiction specialists, ordained pastors with Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. Their goal is to teach the women coping skills and tools needed to live and maintain a life of sobriety. The program focuses on all aspects of addiction including shame, isolation, abuse, codependency and lack of boundaries and structure.
