*Update* Thanks to such a generous response, we have already filled this need. We are incredibly grateful for so many in the community who are willing to help.
We’re planning a mother’s day picnic for the women in the Dove’s Nest program and we’re looking for a sponsor. The Charlotte Observer covers the story:
There are 12 women in the Dove’s Nest program, and half of them have underage children they probably won’t be seeing on Mother’s Day. In many cases, their children are being raised by other family members or are in the care of the social services system, officials said.
This marks the first year Charlotte Rescue Mission has sought to comfort the women with a picnic, said Executive Director Tony Marciano. It’s hoped that a women’s group from a local congregation can be recruited to host the picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in a local park, he said. Transportation for the women and one staff member will be provided by the mission.
“We’re just asking for a picnic to engage the women for the day, which is huge,” said Marciano. “They often feel like a failure when it comes to their children, so we like keeping them busy.”
Donations are also needed for cookout items, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, chips, slaw, salad and condiments.
