BB&T Partners with Charlotte Rescue Mission

The partnership is part of BB&T’s company wide community service initiative in August and September called the “BB&T Lighthouse Project.” A grant provided by The Lighthouse Project through BB&T enabled Bennie Boyles, Tom Herczeg and his team to provide much-needed items for Charlotte Rescue Mission’s Rebound and Dove’s Nest Programs.  $1,200 worth of supplies such as sweatshirts, razors, paper towels, toilet tissue, brooms, mops, cups, etc were purchased and delivered by Bennie Boyles–left, Tom Herczeg—right.

How to Volunteer

We ask all new volunteers and all leaders for volunteer groups to attend a Talk & Tour orientation, which we host twice a month. The Talk & Tour sessions last about one hour, and the Thursday tours are followed with lunch. Please RSVP by contacting Andria Tindall at 704-334-4635 ext. 214 or andria.tindall@charlotterescuemission.org.

Mealtime at the Mission

Grab your Sunday School class, your neighbors, your business group, or your family to prepare breakfast, lunch, or dinner at the Mission! Your group can do something really special at the Mission by providing a meal for our residents. Task: Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch or dinner for 150 clients at the Mission

Requirements: Purchase the food or make a donation and we will buy the food for you

Charlotte Rescue Mission hosts a ‘Talk & Tour’ twice a month. This event gives our donors a chance to take a tour of our facilities, meet the staff and learn about volunteer opportunities.  They last about an hour and begin promptly at 12 or 5pm.

Talk & Tour also doubles as our “volunteer orientation” which is required for anyone who wants to volunteer at the mission.

Talk & Tour is a great way for donors to see how their money is being used at the mission and will give those interested in volunteering a chance to learn about volunteer opportunities.

If you are interested in visiting the mission please call Andria Tindall at 704-334-4635 x214 or you may email her at andria.tinadall@charlotterescuemission.org.

Charlotte Rescue Mission (CRM) provides residential programs for homeless, jobless men and women with alcohol and drug addiction issues. Our clients typically have few options available to them because they have no health coverage to help them enter a recovery program to realize a new life of sobriety.  The professional recovery programs and additional services Charlotte Rescue Mission offers to support these individuals are provided to them at no cost.

We serve a fragile, at-risk population. The men and women coming to the Mission are aware of a need to make radical changes in their lives.  In 2004, over 500 men and women participated in our recovery programs. Seventy four percent of our clients admitted in 2004 were homeless.  The average client has been in jail or prison two to three times and some of them suffer from malnutrition.  Over 70% are dually diagnosed with addiction problems, as well as mental or emotional problems.

Homelessness is often the factor that triggers a realization that drug and alcohol abuse has ruined their lives. Mission clients are relapse-prone addicts that society has given up on, and many have given up on themselves. There is a waiting list for entry into the Mission’s programs. There are limited programs offered to those without insurance or funding. In addition, the community has witnessed changed lives in many of our clients and knows the Mission gives hope to those battling with addiction.

We serve adults 18 years and older. Our clients come to the Mission based on the positive reputation we have built over the last 67 years often on the recommendation of someone familiar with the program’s success rate, including our former clients.  Referrals are made by: probation officers, Mecklenburg County Detox, other substance abuse programs, church pastors, program graduates, coworkers, friends and family members.

Men and women come to us from all walks of life. Each person, regardless of how they learn about the Mission, personally calls to request admission into our program to indicate their commitment to begin their recovery. Each client has his/her own personal story and we work with them to help them address the issues that have brought them to our doors and have kept them from living a full and productive life.

I just witnessed a miracle. I was recently at our Dove’s Nest program and heard the story about a woman who had come into our program beaten down. There were several times she wanted to quit the program. She prayed and saw the hand of God guiding her each and every day. The miracle is that she completed our program and is moving onto our Dove’s Nest Continuing Care Division.
